This cabin in the woods is a commission I painted for a client. Many Phoenicians make weekend escapes from the summer heat to the high country in Northern Arizona but not everyone has a little piece of heaven to call their own. This client wanted a portrait of their cabin they love so much. I took several trips up to the cabin to familiarize myself with it, take photos from different angles and different times of days. Then I painted two oil sketches on canvas paper to help the client select the composition they liked best. From that selection and some additional modifications, I painted the final piece, a 16 x 20 on linen panel.

Thirty paintings in 30 days - Day 22.Today's painting is a scene from a winter hike on the Rocky Ridge Trail near Flagstaff, Arizona. I loved the uphill shadows on the snow. I think this is my favorite from this month's daily paintings so far.

Thirty paintings in 30 days - Day 16. Autumn colors cover the mountainside in Colorado. Experimented with various textures and colors in this painting. I used a lot of galkyd medium to get a thicker application and used the palatte knife to both smoth texture and dig out texture.

September was a busy month, my husband was out of the country for ten days, our toddler was in the hospital for six days, and I was preparing for my first solo exhibition at Esprit Decor Gallery in Phx (opens this Friday). I did manage to paint 30 paintings in 30 days!
I have sold nearly one third of the paintings, the rest are still available at auction until Oct. 8 when I will convert them back to the regular pricing, so go bid now!

Seems like I am always painting a season we are not in. Another autumn painting, I am ready to skip over summer in Phoenix, AZ, ahead to fall. A long way off... So I will create the feeling of fall in my studio!

This large painting was inspired by a potential commission. After talking to a collector about a vertical spring/summer forest scene, I re-imagined a much smaller piece I painted a few years ago to create this composition. This is a larger painting than the potential commission that was discussed. My largest painting to date! It was a lot of fun to paint. My camera does not capture it as well as I would like.

During winter break, Andrej took Stephan to our tree farm in WA to do some work so the rest of the kids and I drove up to Flagstaff to hike and play in the snow. As usual, I took a lot of pictures to use as references for paintings. Right as we were about to leave at the end of the day, the shadows were long, I spoted this scene and started snapping away, each frame was completely different since the light was changing so fast.

This is the scenery along Kachina Trail in the Flagstaff, Arizona area. You can see why it is one of our favorite hiking spots!

Day's Farewell was inspired at the end of hike with my kids near Flagstaff, AZ. The sun was starting to go down and we were loaded in the car to start the drive home when I looked up and saw such great lighting. I jumped back out and took another 30 pictures or so to use for reference.
Once home, I did a couple to-scale thumbnail sketches with grayscale markers followed by an oil sketch on canvas paper to use for a color study.

I took a one day workshop on winter landscapes led by artist Joni Falk at Scottsdale Artists' School. It was a great day of painting and meeting other artists. The hard part was being away from baby Silvia that long (the longest I've been away from her in her first year!) Here's my painting from the day, titled "Christmas Gift", 6 x 8, oil.
I titled it Christmas Gift because the workshop was a gift to myself and the painting would be a nice holiday gift. This is Hart Prairie near Flagstaff in northern Arizona.

This past summer an inspirational woman named Christy Rosander (trail name Rockin') hiked a portion of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). I follow her blog, Lady on a Rock - check it out to read more about her adventures. I started following her blog a couple years ago and a year ago or so, asked her permission to use one of her photos to use a reference for a painting - I blogged about it here.
So this is how cool Rockin' is. She teaches 5th grade and spends her summer's hiking through trails like the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the CDT. This of course takes a lot planning throughout the year. And it takes incredible endurance during the hike. She logged almost 1200 miles in 61 days! When she returned and posted her photo albums on Flickr, I come across a beautiful aspen photo and it is named "a painting" - so I could not resist and posted on her blog about how much I loved her entire album, but especially that particular photo. She replies she actually took that photo with ME in mind! Can you imagine all that goes into hiking 1200 grueling miles and to think about me, who she's never met, and take a photo that I might use for a painting?!
So here it is! Hope you enjoy it.

Aspen Dreams is inspired by the Greer area in northeastern Arizona. I lived in that area for about six years and we go there often to hike and mushroom hunt. Often while my husband mushroom hunts, I "landscape hunt" taking photos for potential paintings. The elevation in this part of the state is higher than 8,000 feet and there are many alpine lakes scattered around. For me, this is a classic September afternoon in the high country. I can imagine taking a rest in the shade of the aspens with a view of the distant lake and let my mind drift.
